The practical difference is access. Villas that were locked for the summer open their calendars, often at gentler rates. The tables that needed a relationship in August need only a phone call in September. The riding stables, the boats out of Tróia, the winemakers inland: everything says yes more easily, and everything feels more personal because you are no longer one of hundreds asking.

This is also the month for the experiences that hate crowds. Horseback at golden hour with the beach entirely to yourselves. A sail through the Sado estuary where the dolphins outnumber the boats. Long dinners where the kitchen has time to talk. The rice harvest begins in the fields, and the landscape turns gold as if on cue.

We promised honest notes, so: a small number of places begin trimming their hours in late September, and the ocean, while warm, is still the Atlantic, with days when the waves ask for respect. The first autumn rain can arrive in the final week. None of this has ever spoiled a September stay we have arranged; it simply rewards a plan made by someone watching the details.
